4.7 Creative drawing tool project

Overview

Two project choices - decide ahead of time which is most appropriate for your students (you can differentiate within your class too!):
- One starts from a blank project
- One starts from a starter template (variables are already created, pen already follows the mouse, black circle placeholders for color choices)

Do Now (2 min): Have you ever drawn on a computer before? What were you able to make?
Lecture (5 min)
- What is a drawing app?
  - A tool that lets us draw with our mouse! Drawing apps can range from very simple (Microsoft Paint) to very sophisticated (ProCreate)
  - The basic features of a simple drawing app let us draw by clicking and dragging with our mouse, change the color, and change the pen size
  - We have the tools to create a simple drawing app in Scratch!
- Review
  - What Scratch tools have we been practicing that might be useful?
  - The pen tools! We’ll use these extension blocks to code our app
Activity (20-30 min)
- Students will follow the step-by-step activity guide to create their drawing app
- If students are building from a blank project, they can simply log in to Scratch and create a new project
- If students are building from the starter template, they can get the link from Classroom and log in to start their projects
- Once students have coded all of the paint features, they can use their app to create a piece of art!
  - They can make the Stage full screen to enlarge their canvas
- Students can add sprites, have them stamp, and add effects to finish their projects
Share Out (5 min)
- If time permits, have students share out their projects! Call attention to how students personalized their apps (color choices, did any change the shape of the color sprites?, what they created for their erasers…)
