Lesson description:

Students will learn to use basic selection tools in Photoshop to isolate and manipulate specific parts of an image.

Pre-Lesson Instructions:

Students will need their files from the student files folder provided to them.

Do Now (3 minutes):

Which selection tools have you used so far and what do they do?

Lecture/Demo (10 minutes):

• Discuss the Purpose of Selection Tools

  Explain that selection tools allow us to isolate specific parts of an image, which is useful for editing, moving, or applying adjustments to certain areas.

• Overview of Key Selection Tools

  Briefly introduce each of the primary selection tools:

  • Marquee Tool (Rectangle and Elliptical)
  • Lasso Tool (Standard, Polygonal, Magnetic)
  • Quick Selection Tool
  • Magic Wand Tool

• Demonstrate Basic Use of Each Tool

  Video demonstration.

Activity (20-25 minutes) :

Students will use assigned selection tools to carefully select, copy, and position objects onto matching silhouettes in Photoshop. Each object has a designated tool:

• Elliptical Marquee Tool: Sand Dollar
• Magnetic Lasso Tool: Starfish, Shell 1, Shell 2
• Quick Select Tool: Seahorse, Shell 3, Shell 4

After aligning the selections, students will save their work as “STUDENTNAME_Selections.jpeg” and submit it in the class file.
